worldcongress.net is an independent directory of recurring scientific and academic conferences. It records dates, abstract deadlines and where proceedings are indexed — and it records where each of those facts came from and when someone last checked.

Why it exists

The existing conference directories mostly republish whatever an organiser sends them. That makes them fast to build and nearly useless at the moment it matters, which is when you are deciding whether a call for papers is worth your time. Meanwhile every “best conference software” article on the internet is published by a company selling conference software.

There is room for something that simply checks, says where it looked, and takes no money for its conclusions. That is the entire idea.

Who runs it

A small independent team. We are not affiliated with any conference organiser, learned society, publisher or software vendor, and we do not accept payment for editorial placement. Where we earn a referral fee, it is disclosed on the page.

The archive

This domain previously hosted the 4th World Congress on Alternatives and Animal Use in the Life Sciences, held in New Orleans in 2002. Its proceedings had been offline for years while researchers continued to cite them — one paper alone is referenced by more than 250 other sites, including Wikipedia.

We restored those documents at their original addresses. They are preserved as a historical record. We have no connection to the Alternatives Congress Trust, which owns and runs the ongoing World Congress series, and this site should not be mistaken for it.

How it is paid for

Optional Enhanced listings, and referral fees from software vendors where a reader chooses to click through. Both are described in the editorial standard. Nothing about them touches what we say about a conference.
