Chairs' Welcome
We last gathered together to review progress in the Three R's in Bologna, Italy, in August, 1999. Almost three years have passed, and the new millennium has brought new challenges that were barely on our radar screen before September 11, 2001. Air travel is now even more tedious, and concepts such as bio-terrorism have taken on a new urgency. And yet, progress in the Three R's continues and Horst Spielmann and I are welcoming you to New Orleans to share time, ideas and data with old friends and colleagues.
New Orleans is a wonderful city. It does not boast the history of Bologna, but it is just as unique and vibrant a metropolis. It is one of the birthplaces and nurturers of jazz, and its Creole culture and food should enchant even the most jaded of us. In addition, for those who are starved of warm climates, there is enough heat--both during the day and in the nightclubs of the Old French Quarter--to satisfy even those with the very thinnest of blood.
Of course, we are really in New Orleans to exchange ideas and findings, and to renew old friendships and build new ones. One of the major developments of large international gatherings takes place outside the actual meeting rooms. The informal conversations and chance gatherings in halls, restaurants and lounges are perhaps the most valuable aspect of such meetings. Networking is vital in science and in public advocacy, and we have an exciting program planned with many interesting and provocative talks and activities.
We are delighted you have chosen to join us this August in New Orleans!
